Read this before you ask your boss to increase your salary

I think its better to read this article before you go talk to your boss about a salary raise, so this is about what to actually say. Again, before you do this, you really have to believe you've done something useful to your boss and that you are worth the higher salary you are asking for. So.. once you believe you are worth that much, then you can consider about talking...

Try to keep your figures realistic...some dudes have a habit of over-estimating their worth, you badly need to do a research on your self before you come up with your value. I would like to suggest a few websites that you should check before your ask for a salary rasie from your boss. Salary.com is a site which will give you a free report & some basic information on the average salary range in your field. It is pretty accurate and will give you a idea of how much you self is worth. The 2nd site is a new site called Payscale.com, Payscale work in an interesting way by having you to submit your salary and work info in order to get check others who have posted their information about their job. It's very accurate for IT related jobs (coz most of us are surfing the web when we should be working) and can give you a good idea of how others are faring against you.

Select the number that you think you are performing at. Are you on top of the 85% of workers or are you more or less than the average rate when it comes to work? Remember! just doing your job (work) is average, so only take the higher value if you actively try to find solutions to various problems in your work place.

Once you have this value, try to figure out how much your current salary is off from this value. If you are within 6%, you're probably doing pretty good in your work place. Being 6 to 8% below your actual value is fine and most company owners will try to give other incentives such as bonuses once their project is complete to make up for the last 8%. If you are in this range and don't have any bonus setup, sit down with your fatty old boss and tell him that you'd like to explore a system where you can earn up to 8% of your salary by finishing off certain big projects during the year. It's also a great way to keep you occupied even during dull hours.

If you're off by more than 8%, you have to take a decision: either move on in to another company because this one is too cheap to pay you more or people are not understanding your value and you need to promote yourself. ( its is a waste of time )

Before going to talk to your boss it is better to get in to the market and do a research on your jobs value. This task actually opens your eyes to just how comfortable you have gotten in your current job position! I got a shock because my bio data sucked, I had gotten weak on some skills, This task may not seem useful, but it will give your real value in the IT market place. Not that you have to take the job if you get a good offer, this can be your ultimate leverage for getting a raise from your boss. Remember you are part of the venture, so when you talk about salary, it's business! so don't feel bad about looking for other jobs online or telling this matter to your fat old boss! he may be your friend also, but in the end you can check it yourself whether they are your real friends, then they will understand when you tell them this matter. Just! like you understand when your boss tells you that they can't give you a salary raise yet because of dull business or Human Resource department won't allow it other reasons. You have the rights to look for something better. it keeps the market place competitive.

If you have done this and researched a lot about your position in comparison to others in your field and arena and have determined that you self is worth more, then TALK to your boss! Is your annual report coming up soon? Make sure it gets done on time and don't forget to take print outs of salaries from both these web sites. Also, prepare a document in microsoft word or excel spreadsheet that lists all the projects you have done during the year and what you accomplished. Don't be panic to bring things into a meeting, be prepared! Just like when you go to buy a vehicle, if you didn't do your research, you gonna get screwed!

let us pretend that you have decided to talk to your boss right now, so what should you say to your boss? here is my good advice! don't give him a chance to start talking. begin talking first. If you wait until your fat old boss starts and you let him go through what they have to say, then you might miss out on your opportunity to promote yourself. have your documents ready and the amount that you want. ALWAYS ask for a salary slightly higher than the number you are willing to take. If you want $60,000, do not ask for $60,000. Ask for $65K or $68K. You might feel a little uncomfortable asking for a higher value, trust me! it works! If you start at $60K, the boss might drop it down from there without even thinking about it and then you will have to accept it.

So when you get in to your bosses room, sit down, and start talking make sure to start by saying you have you analyzed the work you performed over the last year and have concluded that your worth is dollars. Then start going through each item that you have completed and what effect it had on your employers company. Now if your employer had hoped to give you something far less, he will have to rethink quickly and make a decision on whether they want to face the possibility of losing you or should they try and make you happy by getting closer to you by giving you some extra dollars. and certainly throw out that you had a job offer at $$$$$ if your fatty bossy is not budging at all. If you can't get your boss to budget, then either your fatty bossy is stingy or you don't deserve the salary raise. now its your turn! go and try my technics on your boss! it will work. thanks for reading my article.
